Falesti Village Orphanage TEECH Project 2009

Requirments: Split larger dormitories into smaller rooms by way of stud walls Decorate those dormitories when done Murals to be painted in all Dormitories Lighting Toilets – new seats and check plumbing Wash basins – relativey new but new taps required (a couple of basins broken – need replacing) Setup more efficient usage of hot water boiler as they reported it as very expensive to run – currently only 2 showers for the whole of the block Broken pipe in roofing / set in walls needs repairing or replacing / bypassing as it’s causing major damp problems in wash rooms on all floors. Sports equipment Table Tennis Tables Footballs Tennis balls Gym equipment Computers (24) Irons Ironing boards Kettles Industrial washers (2) Industrial dryers (2) Clothes / shoes (especially winter clothes) Tables / chairs for dining room Hot water for washing area / basins in dining area Hot water boilers for sinks in kitchen Ultimate wish: 6 showers on each floor in accommodation block (3 floors) run off main gas boiler in boiler room (separate building – heating in buildings currently being run from it) Additional requirements: Food parcels containing items like Rice, Pasta, Sugar, Flour etc. Photos and outline of work: Washrooms Various plumbing work required – Replace damaged sinks
Provide showers (their wish list is 6 showers per floor – 3 floors)
Provide toilet seats
Replace mixer taps on sinks
Damaged pipe in roof space leaking within walls down all 3 floors causing damage to walls and ceiling
Electrical:
Replace existing lighting with waterproof units
Decorating / other repair work
Repair walls and redecorate where necessary.
Re-fit ceiling back properly
Dormitories Clothes washing room
Split main dormitories into smaller rooms (3-4 beds in each)
New Beds / furniture
Bedding
Decorate
Artwork on walls
Replace lighting
2 Industrial washing machines
2 Industrial dryers
Decorate room (very damp though)
Ironing boards
Irons
Replace lighting with Waterproof units
Kitchen / dining room Computer room
Hallways Note: Two relatively new industrial boilers in plant room – they requested that we provide piping from those boilers into the dormitory block (75-100 mts away) so that hot water can be piped to dormitory block. Main piping already exists to run the radiators – not convinced that it will be possible to use same boilers to provide hot water as there may only be a single feed / return and it may closed loop with inhibitors in it. Gas fired boilers are cheaper to run than electric and the one electric boiler they do have (running 2 showers in the main dormitory block) is very expensive to run. Provide replacement computers
Provide small hot water heaters over sinks (and in kitchens)
Tables and chairs required
Kitchen equipment required
Good decoration – but some artwork would really improve the area

Falesti Village School TEECH Project 2009

General background: Dormitories and classrooms are in good decorative order but facilities are very basic (EG. Hot water and toilets) Heating a major problem No hot water in main school nor Laundry area (existing immersion heater U/S) No showers – although there’s a recently tiles “Wash” area the boiler in the corner is fired by wood and not very safe. Outline of requirements: Warm winter clothes Dining room - chairs / tables required Showers – fit in current “wash room” Area (6 showers & partitions with some 4 wash basins) – approximate size of room is 4.5 mts by 5 mts. Running hot water.... Make existing toilets in toilet block more hygienic and provide some privacy – can be easily done by boxing in existing toilets (boom boxes) with partitions. Decorating required once completed – lighting required and perhaps low wattage wall heaters (could use green house heaters to stave off some of the cold!). Decorate laundry area Replace lighting in new shower room (4 lights) Provide new Boiler in wash room area (50 Gallon) Provide new boiler in Laundry area (50 Gallon) Replace lighting in laundry area (2 lights) Re-decorate laundry area Industrial washing machines Industrial dryers Ironing boards Irons Kitchen equipment Industrial cookers Wood burning stove to run radiators in school Materials needed to provide a new driveway (Possible shingle or concrete or a mixture of both) Additional requirements: Food parcels for distribution to needy families in villages – suggested contents being rice, pasta, sugar, flour etc. Photos and possible suggestions for discussion: Dormitories: New lighting – Energy efficient bulbs etc.
Heating
New Beds and bedding
Although in decorative order it would be greatly improved with some decorative artwork.
Toilet Block Although well painted from the outside – the inside is not too brilliant!
Duplicated both side of the building – row of six holes! Boom Boxes in one row across all holes with Partitions between to afford some privacy.
Decorate and replace lighting
Fit some form of heating – even if it’s greenhouse heaters....
Kitchen Dining area & sinks for washing hands before eating No running hot water Provide small water heaters over sinks
General decoration very good Some art work would really improve the area though
Additional tables and chairs required Some form of hot water supply and soap dispensers wouldn’t go amiss!
Wash down area Full strip wash down using the metal bowls on the tables. Provide up to 6 showers within “cubicled” areas and 4 wash basins in this room.
Currently heated by burning wood onto hot stones and actually in the washing area.... Replace with 50 Gallon electric immersion heater
Cloth washing area (next door to proposed shower room) Dependant on requirements the hot water feeding this area can be either from the new heater in the shower room or alternatively it’s own boiler! Additonal thoughts: Wood burning stove / heating system for the main building could provide hot water for the main building and of course heating via radiators. This would need some very in depth investigation to get the right sort of burner that would run not only the hot water for the main building but also the radiators within the building. We would install the main system running the bare minimum that would then allow the local maintenance person or tradesman to increase the system to it’s maximum! A quick search on the internet found some very good examples of what could be provided but we would need to put together a basic plan and therefore a requirements list to get a quote for the equipment required!

Falesti - Village located in Northern Moldova

This year www.teech.org volunteers have spent their time running a fund raising Masquerade Ball event and 60's/70's disco, collecting aid, advertising the TEECH cause and gaining new volunteers for our 2 week project in Falesti.

Our project is to drop off aid we have collected and help repair the village school and orphanage to help raise their standards of living, health and education.

We only have limited information available at the moment on Falesti and as I find more information I will be adding it to the blog. Here are some pictures we receive from a visit by a few of the TEECH Trustees and volunteers
